The mission of the Department of Health is to improve health status through the prevention of illnesses and the promotion of healthy lifestyles, and to consistently improve the health care delivery system by focusing on access, equity, efficiency, quality and sustainability.
The major strategic framework for the work of the Department is the Negotiated Service Delivery Agreement (NSDA). The four outputs required from the health sector in terms of the NSDA are: increased life expectancy; reduced maternal and child mortality rates; combatted HIV/AIDS and decreased burden of disease from tuberculosis; and strengthened health system effectiveness
