LADOT’s mission is to lead transportation planning, project delivery, and operations in the City of Los Angeles. We work together and collaborate to deliver a safe, livable, and well-run transportation system in the city and region.

HISTORY
1920s – City adopts major traffic plan and simplified traffic code to deal with popularization of motor vehicles after World War I
1930 – Ralph T. Dorsey helps form the Bureau of Street Traffic Engineering as unity of the Police Department
1949 – Department of Traffic Engineering created to address post World War II growth
1953 – change in City charter creates Department of Traffic
February 25, 1979 – the Los Angeles Department of Transportation formed by city ordinance
OPERATIONS
LADOT’s Operations focuses on managing the operation of city streets for motorists, transit, cyclists, pedestrians, and movement of goods.
This also includes:
- Traffic signal operations (signal synchronization)
- Neighborhood services through our district offices
- Repair and maintenance of transportation infrastructure
- Emergency preparedness and temporary traffic management for emergencies
- Construction projects
- Special events, among other things
PARKING
LADOT manages all on-street parking in the city and 118 public parking lots and garages.
LADOT is also responsible for installing and maintaining parking signs, colored curb restrictions, parking meters, and parking permit zones.
In addition, LADOT enforces state and municipal parking laws.
