About

Gender and Women’s Studies

Think! Critique! Act! Create! Transform! Our innovative undergraduate programs offer interdisciplinary courses on gender, women and the constructions and intersections of race, sexuality, class, age and ability. Courses explore the relation of power in the lives of individuals, groups and cultures in multiple settings locally and transnationally. Topics include daily life, popular culture, the arts, sciences, politics, the economy and world cultures and events. Students develop the practical, theoretical, communication and organizational skills to think, write and act critically and creatively – skills used in daily life and applicable to any career. Our graduates apply their understandings of women’s issues and gender analyses in a wide range of fields, including the arts, education, law, social work, public service, NGOs, business, government and media.

Sexuality Studies

Be part of a large and exciting community of scholars, writers, artists and activists who are producing new ways of thinking about sex, gender and sexuality. Explore sexuality in transnational and global contexts, and examine sexuality in relation to age, class, gender, ethnicity, race, religion and other categories of difference, identity and power. Available on both campuses, the program offers courses, seminars, lectures and special events addressing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, intersex and queer topics. You’ll explore themes such as abortion, birth control, pornography, sex tourism, sex work, sexual health and disease, sexual politics, transgender and sexual rights, citizenship and sexual violence. As a graduate, explore your career in areas such as health and medicine, social work, social services, counselling, law, politics, government, activism, journalism, communications, media, fine arts, education and sex education.

Graduate Program in Gender, Feminist and Women’s Studies

The Graduate Program in Gender, Feminist and Women’s Studies offers an MA and a PhD to full-time and part-time students. Our program is fundamentally interdisciplinary in formation and practice. One of our primary goals is to develop and apply a feminist analytical perspective to teaching and research on women and gender as they intersect with sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, ability, and age.  A second goal is to provide rigorous interdisciplinary training that provides students with the tools to enact social transformation in theory and praxis and enables students to conduct research and analysis both within and outside academia.
