Bus or charter vehicle driver: F extension
An F extension, also known as a bus driver’s licence or charter vehicle licence, allows a driver to carry passengers for hire or reward, regardless of the number of seats fitted.
It is required if you:
- Transport passengers during work hours as part of your general employment.
- Transport passengers during work hours as an incidental part of your general employment, if the vehicle seats more than 12 persons (including the driver).
- Operate omnibuses, charter buses or limousines.
- Receive payment that exceeds the operating costs per kilometre of the vehicle.
An F extension is not required if:
- The payment you receive for carrying passengers does not exceed the operating costs per kilometre of the vehicle.
- The service is purely voluntary.
- You are carrying passengers during work hours as an incidental part of your general employment and the vehicle seats 12 persons or less (including the driver).
- You are a member of the police force.
- You are driving in the course of providing a child care service under the Child Care Services Act 2007 (WA).
- You hold a T (taxi) extension.
Note:
This licence is an extension of your existing driver’s licence. You must also have the relevant licence for the class of vehicle you will be driving.

To be eligible for an F extension, you must:
- Be at least 20 years of age.
- Have held a relevant driver’s licence for at least 3 years.
- Be of good character.
- Be mentally and physically fit to drive a motor vehicle for the purposes of carrying passengers for reward.

Taxi vehicle driver: T extension
A T extension, also known as a Taxi driver’s licence, allows a driver to carry passengers for hire or reward, when the vehicle is licensed as a taxi, as well as other vehicles, regardless of the number of seats fitted.
To become a taxi driver in Western Australia you will need to apply for a T (taxi) extension on your driver’s licence.
Note:
This licence is an extension of your existing driver’s licence. You must also have the relevant licence for the class of vehicle you will be driving.

To be eligible for an T extension, you must:
- Be at least 20 years of age.
- Have held a relevant driver’s licence for at least 3 years.
- Be of good character.
- Be mentally and physically fit to drive a motor vehicle for the purposes of carrying passengers for reward.

The WA taxi industry is administered by the Department of Transport, which regulates the number of taxi licence plates and sets the standards for taxi vehicles and the taxi driver code of conduct.

Step 2:Complete a police check – bus, taxi or charter vehicle driver
National Police Certificate (NPC)
Application for your National Police Certificate (NPC) can be made at:
- Australia Post, or
- An accredited organisation. A list of accredited organisations is available on the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission website.
The NPC must be no older than three months, and remain valid for the duration of the application process, approximately 10 working days, once a completed application is received.

Step 3:Provide proof of identity
You will be required to submit sufficient proof of your identify for the application.

Step 4:Submit the application in person (Form DL1)
Under the Road Traffic (Authorisation to Drive) Act 2008, applications for a Western Australian driver’s licence must be submitted in person at a Driver and Vehicle Services centre or regional agent.
You will need to provide:
- Completed F and T extension application form DL1.
- National Police Certificate.
- Proof of identity documents.
- Required fees. (non-refundable)

Step 5:Go for a medical check-up: bus, taxi or charter vehicle drivers
Once your application has been submitted, you will need to undergo a medical check-up (including an eyesight test) with your health professional.
Please download the form below and have your health professional complete it and submit it directly to the Department of Transport.
The completed medical assessment certificate must be received by the Department within 3 months of the application date. Late submissions will be refused, and you will be notified if this happens.
Note:
You will need to reapply for an F or T extension if your application is refused, including due to late submissions.

Step 6:Issue of licence: Bus, taxi or charter vehicle drivers
If your application is successful, your licence record will be updated to include the F or T extension endorsed on the rear of the licence card, and you will be advised of the outcome in writing.
However, a new driver’s licence card will only be issued when you renew your current licence. You may wish to order a replacement licence that will reflect your updated authorisation to drive.
What to do after you obtain your bus, taxi or charter vehicle driver’s licence
Once you have been issued with your updated driver’s licence card, you must carry it on you whenever you are carrying passengers for hire or reward.
You are required to undergo periodic medical assessments if you wish to maintain an F or T extension on your driver’s licence. Reference: Road Traffic (Authorisation to Drive) Regulations 2014.

Starting an eco or nature-based tourism business in Western Australia
Economic Reform, Department of Treasury, is undertaking a series of regulatory mapping and reform projects that focus on identifying and reducing regulatory and administrative impediments in targeted areas of the Western Australian economy. Many of these projects will make it easier for businesses to commence, operate and innovate in Western Australia, and will deliver benefits to local communities.
The 90 Day Regulatory Mapping and Reform Projects were announced in May 2016. These projects will be undertaken continually over a three year period from 2016-17 to 2018-19.
One of the completed projects is Eco and Nature-base Tourism Project: Making it easier to run an eco or nature-based tourism business.
There are many steps involved in establishing an eco or nature-based business. You will need to consider factors including (but not limited to):
- Business structure and registrations (including business and tax).
- Licensing requirements.
- Obligations when selling goods or services.
- Obligations to staff (if applicable). Occupational health and safety obligations.
