The Science & Technology Department of the Government of West Bengal was set up in 1988. The West Bengal State Council of Science & Technology, an autonomous body, registered under the Societies Registration Act & under the administrative control of this Department, was established on an all-India pattern, to facilitate the operationalizing of the Department’s mandate, with inputs from eminent experts in diverse specialized scientific and technology-related spheres.
It has spread its activities manifold, with the participation of the scientific and academic community. In the span of two decades this Department has traversed a long way in promoting scientific activities in various fields and fostered important research and innovative programmes through reputed Universities, Research Institutes, Colleges and Civil Society.
Through Remote Sensing and Geo-Information Systems, the Department plays a very key role in providing state-of-the-art tools and base documents to assist Government Departments and Agencies in improving their planning and monitoring techniques.
Some of the Projects in this sector are undertaken in partnership with the National Remote Sensing Centre and Indian Space Research Organization of the Government of India.
It supports Seminars, Workshops and awareness programmes in important areas such as the global warming & climate change, green technologies, water conservation, solid waste management, biodiversity, innovative rural technologies, agricultural developments, intellectual property rights in partnership with various well-established organizations of the State.
