Department of IPID Empangeni, Empangeni is a town in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is approximately 157 kilometres north of Durban, situated in hilly countryside, overlooking a flat coastal plain and the major harbour town of Richards Bay only 16 kilometres away. The N2 freeway runs just east from Empangeni intersecting the John Ross Highway (R34) which connects Empangeni and Richards Bay.



Parliament, Sunday, 30 July 2017 – The Portfolio Committee on Police will tomorrow (Monday, 31 July) commence with its assessment of the KwaZulu-Natal state of policing by visiting Empangeni police station, near Richards Bay.

The visit will comprise briefing from the station management on their challenges and crime fighting interventions. The briefings will be followed by site inspection of various components of the service offerings available at the station. The programme will start at 09h30.

On Tuesday, 01 August, the Committee will move its scrutiny to KwaNongoma police station.

On Wednesday, 02 August, Committee members will be in Pietermaritzburg to receive briefings from the management team of the SAPS specialised units. The Pietermaritzburg visit will end with site inspections to the offices of the various specialised units.



Thursday, 03 August will see the Committee conducting oversight visit at the Chatsworth and uMlazi police stations in Durban.

On Friday 04 August, the Committee will receive a briefing from the Acting Head of Hawks, Lt-Gen Yolisa Matakata on the report of the break-in that occurred at the Hawks head offices at the beginning of July. This meeting will take place at the provincial office of the Hawks in Durban and is scheduled for 09h00. The Committee had issued a statement describing this incident as unacceptable and undertook to call Lt-Gen Matakata to explain circumstances surrounding this incident.

The Committee will conclude its Friday programme by receiving briefings form the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on the allegations of police misconduct that emerged during the Moerane Commission of Inquiry. The Committee will also be an engagement with the Private Security Industry Regulator.
