The Department of Corrections works to make New Zealand a better, safer place by:

• protecting the public from those who can cause harm
• reducing re-offending.

Each week we manage around 10,000 people in prisons and 30,000 offenders in our communities. Our 8,000 staff are committed to supporting offenders to help them address their offending and gain skills that will help them lead a crime-free life.

Corrections protect the public of New Zealand from those who can harm them, by:

• making sure prisoners, parolees and other offenders in the community comply with the sentences and orders imposed by the Courts and Parole Board
• providing offenders with rehabilitation programmes, education and job training that will turn their lives around and break the cycle of re-offending.

Corrections’ goal is to reduce re-offending by 25%.
Achieving this goal will see 600 fewer people going back to prison and 4,000 fewer people being reconvicted on community offences. But more than anything else, achieving this goal will mean there are 18,500 fewer victims of crime.
