The provincial choral music competition is taking place at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre in Port Shepstone this weekend. Performances at this year’s event will be backed by the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra.

The competition aims to develop choristers, composers and the genre as a whole throughout KwaZulu-Natal. It ties in with Youth month on an annual basis, with year’s competition occurring during the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the 1976 uprisings.

Today’s programme includes emerging, intermediate and advanced categories as well as small ensembles. This final round of the competition was preceded by regional eliminations and rehearsals at The Playhouse earlier this week.

MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi will deliver the keynote address.

‘We’ve seen a notable increase in the number of young people who participate in this event, it is for this reason as well as the Department’s drive to cultivate talent in the province that the Department continues to facilitate such programmes. Our regional offices are available to all artists who wish to find ways to further develop themselves using their craft,’ said MEC Sithole-Moloi.
