The Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (DAFF) are responsible for managing and supporting the agricultural sector in South Africa and ensuring that all citizens have access to safe and nutritious food.



DAFF is awarding bursaries to students who are studying or intend on studying within the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries field, which is currently a scarce skills sector in the country.

ABOUT THE BURSAR

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (DAFF) is responsible for managing and supporting the agricultural sector in South Africa and ensuring that all citizens have access to safe and nutritious food.
DAFF is awarding bursaries to students who are studying or intend on studying within the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries field, which is currently a scarce skills sector in the country.

ABOUT THE BURSARY

The following expenses will be covered by DAFF: tuition, prescribed books, accommodation, meals, and a monthly allowance.

The bursary programme is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students within the following fields of study:
BSc degrees:

  • Bioresource Engineering (Agricultural Engineering)
  • Entomology
  • Food Science
  • Forestry and Wood Science
  • Ichthyology (Specialising in Aquaculture)
  • Marine Biology
  • Oceanography and Marine Biology
  • Plant Pathology
  • Viticulture and Oenology

BVSc degree:

  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science

National Diplomas:

  • Food Technology
  • Forestry
  • Marine Science

Postgraduate studies:

  • All agriculture, forestry and fisheries fields linked to DAFF priority research projects (B.Sc./ B.Tech/ D.Tech/ M.Sc. Hons/ M.Tech/ Ph.D.)

Please note that certain fields of study are limited to the following tertiary institutions:
BSc Bioresource Engineering: only available at the University of KwaZulu-Natal,
BSc Oceanography and Marine Biology: only available at the University of Cape Town,
BSc Viticulture and Oenology & B.Sc. Forestry and Wood Science: only available at the University of Stellenbosch,
BSc Ichthyology (specialising in Aquaculture): only available at Rhodes University,
National Diploma in Marine Science: only available at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology,
National Diploma in Forestry: only available at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying:



  • South African citizen,
  • Achieved the following minimum results in Matric/ Grade 12:
    • BSc Bioresource Engineering (Agricultural Engineering) & Bachelor of Veterinary Science: level “6” (70% to 79%) for Mathematics and Physical Science,
    • ALL other BSc students: level “5” (60% to 69%) for Mathematics and Physical Science,
    • National Diploma students: level “4” (50% to 59%) for Mathematics and Physical Science.

*Preference will be given to previously disadvantaged students and those from poor and rural communities. Disabled applicants are also encouraged to apply.

  • Matric/ Grade 12 results/ academic record (certified copy),
  • Qualification certificates (certified copy),
  • University admission/ acceptance letter (certified copy),
  • Parents/ guardians proof of income (latest payslips) (certified copy) OR proof of SASSA grant income (certified copy) OR death certificates (certified copy).

Postgraduate students:

  • ID document (certified copy),
  • Latest complete academic record (certified copy),
  • Qualification certificates (certified copy),
  • University admission/ acceptance letter (certified copy),
  • Parents/ guardians proof of income (latest payslips) (certified copy) OR proof of SASSA grant income (certified copy) OR death certificates (certified copy).
