Deborah Mochotlhi is currently the acting Director General for the Department of Water and Sanitation
Mochotlhi started her public service career as an Environmental Health Officer in the North West Province from 1986 to 1991.
From 1997 Mochotlhi was promoted to the position of Chief Environmental Health Officer at the Mafikeng District, North West. Between 1991 and 2001 Mochotlhi worked as a Senior Environmental Management Systems Auditor, with the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS).
From 2002 to 2005 she worked as a Manager: Environmental Audits with the South African National Parks and Mochotlhi then joined the then Department of Water Affairs (DWA) where she became employed as the Chief Director: Water Use until 2010.
Mochotlhi’s diligence, saw her move up the corporate ladder, first as the Chief Director: Regulations and then in 2013 as the Deputy Director-General (DDG): Planning & Information with the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS).
In her capacity as the Acting Director General, Mochotlhi occupies the role of a Sherpa on the High Level Panel on Water which consists of 11 sitting Heads of State and aims to mobilize effective action and advocate on financing and implementation to increase access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation for all.
Some of her qualifications includes a Masters : Environment and Society from the University of Pretoria, a Bachelor of Technology: Environmental Health from Technicon Northern Gauteng, a Bachelor of Public Administration (Honours) from the University of the North West and a Bachelor of Social Science from the University of the North West .
Mochotlhi serves as a Member of Council for Geo-science Board and serves as a Chairperson of the South African National Committee for the United Nations Educational, Social and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)-IHP, as well as the Chairperson of the UNESCO IHP Sub-Saharan Africa National Committee.
